Elders group in Lozells still meet 30 years on.
Eunice and Sr Mary from the Forum visited the Dorcas group which meets at the Lozells Methodist Church & Community Centre every Wednesday 11am-2pm in an effort to build bridges in the community. The group were most welcoming and lively chatter was exchanged.
The Dorcas group was founded in the 1980’s by the Rev Peaden for Bible Study which still continues today. Over the years when the group met it also did sewing, knitting and lingerie making as well. In years past, people came in from the streets if in need of clothing and repairs etc. This service is no longer required but the ladies continue to knit and sew forthemselves, each other and sales of work.
The group today consists mainly of about 10 people who are mainly Caribbean and Nigerian. All whom we met that morning were most hospitable and we enjoyed tea and hot cross buns together. We hope to invite this group to any functions we organise in the community and thus endeavour to bring about more integration in the Lozells area.
