Street Action Week: St Peter’s Road

Last Friday saw the culmination of a week of activity by the Police, Council, Fire Service and Midland Heart, working alongside local people to make improvements in St Peter’s Road.

Throughout the week the police had a mobile unit stationed where local people could drop in and chat about various issues and concerns. Midland Heart undertook a number of repairs and strengthened anti-crime measures in their properties in the road. The Fire Service provided advice on Fire Safety and were able to issue smoke alarms to those who needed them.

The local Environmental Wardens explained responsibilities in relation to putting out rubbish at the right time and the penalties that can be enforced for continuous disregard of the rules. A series of street sweeping sessions also took place so that the road was thoroughly cleaned up. Thanks to Handsworth Practical Care for all their assistance in helping to rid the street of many unwanted piles of rubbish and eyesores.

On Friday the week was rounded off with a celebration in a marquee provided by Midland Heart. ‘Mad Dom’ the clown showed off his party tricks and his versatility with stilts. Hanging baskets were available to give local residents the chance to improve the overall look and feel of the street. The steel band played on through the rain and for those in need of relaxation a deep head massage proved just the trick!

Watch this space for more details and photos of the week’s activitities.
