Lozells Big Tidy Up Family Fun Day

Lozells had a great day on Wednesday of this week (28 October). The sun shone for local residents joining the Big Tidy Up Family Fun Day event in George’s Park.

Several hundred children and families turned out to be entertained by Mad Dom the clown, and the enjoy fun activities such as face painting.

But there was a serious point to the day as well. Local residents in Lozells are clear that the biggest priority for improvement is to tackle the issues of litter and dumping. This event encouraged children to learn the valuable lessons about not dropping litter and taking care of the environment. Several even joined Fleet and Waste Manager Brendan Duffy on a litter pick of the park and surrounding area.

Meanwhile the Mums and Dads learned more about re-cycling and environmental services. Information about what you can and can’t put into blue and green boxes, as well information about home energy saving ideas and tips were all gratefully received.

Apprentices employed by the City as one of the local initiatives to help tackle unemployment had done a great job earlier in the week of painting out the graffiti in the skateboard park and youth workers from Lozells Recreation Group helped bring young people together with an experienced artist to put some new more appropriate messages in its place.

The event was supported by Midland Heart and Family Housing. Our local councillors, Cllr Hussain and Cllr Quinnen, turned out to show their support, and the Police also lent a hand (a good time for people to get their hands on the ever popular ‘cop cards’!)

A Street Champions initiative for the local area will be launched in the next few weeks and will help us to build on the success of the day and to consolidate the commitment which local people have shown to tackling the problems of litter and rubbish together.

More information about Street Champions and pictures from the event will be posted here as soon as we have them

Lozells Community Meeting

Another successful Community Meeting last night in Lozells which was attended by about 30 local people and Chaired by Nawaz Ali from the Neighbourhood Forum. Sgt Ahmed provided an up-date on policing and crime issues in the area. Crime remains the lowest across this particular policing area. Sgt Ahmed explained that there has been a small increase in recorded crime figures over the last 2 months, but this is largely explained by the greater number of drugs raids which have been carried out – there have been over 40 in Lozells just in the current year.
