Free laptop and broadband for voluntary organisations
This is something I picked up at the National Digital Inclusion Conference yesterday. Under its ‘BT Community Connections‘ programme, BT is offering voluntary organisations the chance to apply for a laptop and a year’s internet connection at no cost. All you have to do is tell them how a laptop and internet connection would help you to do your work better. The deadline for applications is…
… 9th June for postal applications and 11th June for online applications.
There are many ways in which being connected to the World Wide Web can help you: whether by reaching more people through a website or blog, reducing costs by using email instead of costly postal communications, or allowing the people you serve to have access to the internet.
If you are unsure of how digital technology can benefit you or your organisation — whether you want to apply for the BT scheme or not — then drop me a line on john.heaven@birmingham.gov.uk!

[...] Other neighbourhood interest came from the East Yardley Neighbourhood Forum who went away with a head crammed full of ideas and established this starting point for conquering the social web world. Also John Heaven was with us looking for help on how to build on what is already being achieved at Lozells.info. [...]
I am writing to let you know about why I will need a computer with an internet connection to it, for the upcoming years. I have recently found out that the local community is providing laptops, therefore i decided to come to the local libary and explain why it will be so useful to me.
I have a lot of work to do, which is maninly coursework based and includes using the internet as well as a computer. I am going onto doing As/A levels a year early and I will find it extremely difficult to cope without having a computer with internet access to it. Therefore, I will find it extremly useful if you could provide me with a laptpop/computer as well as the internet.
The subjects which I have decided to do at college include using a computer, such as ICT, and it will be extremly difficult for me to do such subjects without the use of a computer.
I hope you understand why it is so important for me to have access to a computer and to the internet.
Thankyou
I would like to ask how we at the Marengo Centre Seniors Centre could make an application for a laptop. We have worked for and have money, but would like to purchase new chairs with that money. Our old computor has been patched up so many times, and it was a hand down anyway. Our centre is a charitable trust. The old folk like to see the photo’s taken at events and it is used by committee that voluntarily run the centre. I hope you will be abe to help. Our organisation is with B.T.
