Thursday 5th May – Exercise your right to have a say. Get out and vote!!!
| May 4, 2011 |
Thursday 5th May is a big day. Firstly we need to choose a third councillor to represent the interests of Lozells as a member of the city council. Secondly all English citizens are being asked whether they are happy with the First Past The Post ( FPTP ) voting system which we use now or whether England should change to the Alternative Vote system. Vote YES for AV or NO for FPTP. Read more at

Under the current system (FPTP) we can be led by members of Parliament and Cabinet Ministers supported by very few votes. All they have to do is to get the greatest number of votes compared with other candidates. So even if 1,000 people voted and the highest figure for any one candidate was 200 he or she would be elected. Under AV that would not be possible as the winner has to have at least 50% of the votes cast. This means that under AV the winner has the support of the majority of voters.

THis project is to design an eco l ogo for Lozells, designed by residents. The logo will then be printed onto cloth bags which provide a green and attractive alternative to plastic bags for shoppers and shopkeepers. The project is well under way. There have been two opportunities so far for residents to help with the design. Follow the link below to see photos and find out more.
