I went to this event last year and it was a fun, laid back event in beautiful Handsworth Park, just the place to chill on a summer’s afternoon. Its a free, family event with workshops for all ages. The music bill features Ken Boothe, an internationally acclaimed reggae star from Jamaica. Don’t miss this year’s show this Saturday.
New Testament Church of God – Opening Celebrations
All of us have been watching with interest - and some awe- the demolition and then gradual construction of the New Testament Church of God on the corner of Lozells Road and George Street. The new building is a wonderful design and it’s going to be great to have the congregation back in our midst.
The Church will be holding a weekend of Opening Events as follows:
Saturday 12 December – New Church Dedication Service – 2pm. This is a ticket only event
Sunday 13 December – morning service at 10.00 amd and then Grand Celebration Concert at 6.00pm with The Majestic Songers. Tickets £5
Monday 14 December – Community Celebration Service at 7.30pm
For more information about the Church - and its hostory as the place where Aston Villa Football Club was founded – see the website here www.ntcg-handsworth.org.uk
Eco-Factor Awards
Urban Living and Family Housing worked together with First Class Youth Network to run a local Eco Awards evening last Saturday 31 October. The event was held at Holte School and saw a good turnout of friends, family and supporters of the young people who performed on the night.
4 groups of young people had been rehearsing for just 4 weeks prior to the event. They were asked to express through drama, music, dance, poetry or film, key messages about protecting the planet and looking after the environment.
All four groups: Young Evolution; Eco Chicks with a Kick; Solar; and Eco Brings Fire put on stunning performances. Together they highlighted the dangers to the planet of global warming and stressed the messages of using less power and electricity, driving less and walking more as well as the messages about re-cycling and not throwing rubbish and litter around.
The judges had a hard task to choose between the different groups, but eventually they came to a decision and Young Evolution were declared the winners. They were awarded their cash prize of £500 – while everyone enjoyed an impromptu performance from well known local musician Witness http://www.bbc.co.uk/birmingham/faith/2003/04/the_witness.shtml
