Archive for the ‘refugees’ Category

Do you have contact with refugees from a health care background who want to work in the UK?

Saeed, Patient and Public Involvement officer for PCT writes-:

There is an innovative local NHS & B’ham City University programme supporting health professionals from refugee communities, to train to qualify in the UK by overcoming barriers. This programme has evidence of success for previous participants. Lynda and other colleagues in local PCTs have in recent years engaged a lot with the refugee communities in the city; and this is a brilliant example of local agencies responding.

Neighbourhood Management Board meeting

The Lozells Neighbourhood Management Board met on 31 July. The Board discussed the Delivery Plan which sets out responsibilities between different agencies for taking forward the activities which have been agreed as priorities within the Neighbourhood Plan. Funding for some activities still needs to be identified and the Board agreed that there are a number of projects relating to keeping clean the environment which should be prioritised. These include work with young people and schools – and the Board added the importance of Faith communities – to help to inform and educate local people about their environmental responsibilities. The Board also stressed the importance of effective Enforcement as a critical to making an impact in dealing with the amount of litter and rubbish on the streets.

The Board discussed arrangements for a Community Networking and Awards Event which will be held in the autumn (date in October currently being finalised). This event will be a great opportunity for local people to find out more about local services and to make their own contribution to local life. Watch this space to find out more about this event!

The Board discussed the work which is being developed around a Neighbourhood Employment and Skills Plan. Board members highlighted the importance of jobs and opportunities for the local area and look forward to the publication of the plan later in the autumn as providing a clear framework for taking this work forward.

Finally, the Board received a report from a recent research project which has been undertaken to look at the experience of new communities arriving in the area of Lozells, Handsworth and Soho. The Board concluded that it is important that these perspectives are taken into account in developing plans and delivering services and asked for more work to be done on how this can be implemented.

The papers which were discussed at the meeting on 31 July are available here:
