Lozells Community Meeting

October 8, 2008
7:00 pmto8:30 pm

The Lozells Neighbourhood Forum and Police Community Meeting took place on Wednesday 30 July. The meeting heard from Gillian Lloyd, our Extended Schools Co-ordinator, provided information about the range of activities for children and young people taking place during the summer holidays (see below on this site) Sgt Aziz, from the local Neighbourhood Police Team, provided a presentation about the work of his team and was able to show a continued drop in crime figure in the area. Kate Foley also talked about the work of Neighbourhood Management and Saidal Haque Saeed, from the Neighbourhood Forum, was able to provide information about the South Lozells Housing Community Steering Group. Cllr Hussain was also in attendance at the meeting.

The Community Meeting takes place on a regular basis and discusses priorities to be dealt with through the Neighbourhood Tasking Group (which includes the City Council, Police, Fire Services and local community representatives). The priorities agreed at the meeting were to continue work to tackle the issue of illeagal parking and  shops encroaching on the pavement along Lozells Road. It was also agreed to continue to tackle anti social behaviour – the areas around Leonard Road and St Silas Square were identified as having particular problems.

The next meeting takes place on Wednesday 8 October at 7.00pm at St Pauls and St Silas Church. All Welcome!

Lozells Community meeting report

The Lozells Community Meeting was packed with local people on 28 May. About 50 local residents braved the weather (and missed the football) to turn up to St Pauls and St Silas Church and participate in decision making about local life.

Sgt Ahmed provided the Neighbourhood Police report and took questions along with Neighbourhood Manager, Kate Foley. There were a number of detailed discussions about a range of issues – with the three priority issues emerging as:

  • Anti-social behaviour around Heathfield and Leonard Road
  • Parking around Lozells and Villa Road
  • Speeding on Gerard Street/Nursery Road

Sgt Ahmed was keen to stress that joint work on these issues will not divert police time away from the ongoing task of tackling drug dealing issues and maintaining high visibility patrolling work.

Residents acknowledged that many of the issues raised are long-standing problems which do not easily lend themselves to ‘quick fix’ solutions. But it was recognised that working in partnership between the police and other services – alongside local residents themsleves – can make a difference to the area over time.

The meeting also heard from the  Heart of Birmingham PCT’s Deputy Chief Executive about plans for new local health services. A more detailed report on this part of the meeting will be published shortly.
