The People’s Conference Monday August 22.

I don’t know whether you made it to this open conference last Monday organised by MP Khalid Mahmood and Cllr Waseem Zaffar but I went and learnt a lot.  There were a number of active citizens and agencies from Lozells.  We spent the morning in workshops sharing thoughts on why the riots had happened.  After lunch a panel of six MPs including the chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee Keith Vez took questions from the floor. The areas which stood out for me were concern about the sentences being handed out, the worries about the reduction in Youth Provision due to the cuts, and teh need to engage young people in the discussions about the riots.

It was really great to see so many MPs taking time to visit and discuss with local people. What was also fantastic was to realize that there had been no trouble in Lozells itself.  This could well be because of the great relationships built locally between the police and the community, and the commitment of local community leaders and activists to being out there with the crowd keeping a lid on things. Well done Lozells.

Saturday July 9th PEOPLES CONFERENCE 2011

I think this is going to be an event not to miss if you care about Lozells and want to have a say in its future.  The conference is being called by Councillor Waseem Zaffar.  He has plans to bring together all the active citizens in Lozells to address situations no longer taken care of by the local authority because of the cuts. His idea is to set up 5 Neighbourhood Forums. Secondly he wants to bring people together to talk about local affairs under 8 headings – Community Safety, Health, Women, Children and Young People, Housing and the Environment, Employment and Business, and Voluntary and Community groups.

The conference is at City College on the Soho Rd : 10.30-2pm. Call Raj Rattu on 07515 531 272 to register or email him at rajinder@neighbourhoodconsultancy.co.uk
